The 2012 School and College Building Expo, held in conjunction with the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education Winter Conference, will offer 30 concurrent sessions that will highlight top professionals who are shaping the future of educational facility design in both the PK-12 and higher education markets. Sessions will focus on furthering the knowledge of professionals who design, plan and maintain these types of facilities. We strongly encourage presentations that have “take home” value and are interactive—leaving each attendee feeling that they learned something at each session.

The theme for the event revolves around “Innovation and Moving Forward in the New Economy”–as defined in the following statement:

As the U.S. economy slowly recovers, we need to come together as architects, planners, owners, educators and designers to understand the “new normal” emerging from the recession, and continue our commitment to developing innovative ways to improve facilities in which learning occurs.

We are beginning the second decade of this exciting new century, and continue to be faced with the reality of accelerated schedules, shrinking budgets and funding cuts. Despite these challenges, our nation will spend hundreds of billions of dollars to replace, renovate or build thousands of school buildings over the next 10 to 20 years. This new reality still demands that we continue to program, design and build thoughtful and engaging learning environments that serve students, teachers and the community alike. This is true whether for PK-12 schools, early learning, post-secondary education, corporate or community learning centers.

This year, we will continue to elevate the level of discourse about design, environmental responsibility, teaching and learning, context, and the development of community partnerships in support of improving the country’s teaching and learning environments. Our dialogue will include internationally recognized thought leaders from around the nation, together with architects and allied professionals to explore the relationship between our new economic reality, design and the impact on the spaces that we create to support learning.

We hope you will consider allowing your peers to benefit from your knowledge and expertise in this stimulating setting. Remember, deadline to submit your presentation proposal is October 21, 2011. For further information regarding presentation submissions, read our submission guidelines and dowload a PDF version of the form to help you formulate your proposal.
